Net Returns: A Human Capacity Development Framework for Marine Capture Fisheries Management in South East Asia

MRAG Asia Pacific, in partnership with Poseidon ARM, was commissioned to develop a framework to guide investments in human and institutional capacity development for marine capture fisheries management among the 11 South East Asian countries participating in the Regional Plan of Action to Promote Responsible Fishing Practices including Combating Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported (IUU) Fishing in the Region (RPOA). The Framework was developed through a participatory process, with regional capacity development priorities agreed at a Regional Workshop held in Da Nang, Vietnam in November 2010.
Pacific Regional MCS Strategy Projects

MRAG Asia Pacific, in association with the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (University of Wollongong), Pacific Operations and a number of independent specialists, were commissioned by the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) to undertake a range of analytical projects to support the development of a Regional Monitoring, Control and Surveillance (MCS) Strategy for Pacific oceanic fisheries.

Review of Fish Sustainability Information Schemes

This review, written by MRAG with editorial oversight from Professor James Young at University of Stirling, was commissioned by the Fish Sustainability Information Group (FSIG), an international consortium representing a variety of national organisations concerned with seafood trade headed by Seafish. It is an objective assessment of a selection of certification schemes and recommendation lists for both capture fisheries and aquaculture.
New Zealand Developing Fisheries

This study examined best practice approaches to the management of new and emerging fisheries under New Zealand's fisheries management framework. The report reviews approaches used to 'prove up' fisheries for new species in a range of jurisdictions internationally, looks at lessons learned from New Zealand's recent experiences with developing fisheries and makes observations on the key future challenges for the management of developing fisheries given the unique charateristics of New Zealand's management system.
Investigation of Unique Vessel Identifier (UVI) and Phasing Options for the development of a Global Record of Fishing Vessels, Refridgerated Transport Vessels and Supply Vessels

This study explores options for the development of a unique vessel identifier (UVI) for fishing vessels to support the development of a Global Record of Fishing Vessels (GRFV). The study also provides recommendations for the phased introduction of the GRFV according to fishing vessel risk.
Best Practice Study of Fish Catch Documentation Schemes

The purpose of this study was to review the current status of trade and catch documentation schemes used by regional fisheries management organisations (RFMOs) in order to assist efforts aimed at improving existing schemes and developing new schemes.
